Ryan’s Story

This was definitely not a part of Ryan’s* plan. He loved his girlfriend Shannon*, but at 22 he did not feel grown-up enough to be a father. 


What would her family think? What would his family think? 

What would his friends think? 


If they chose abortion no one would have to know and they could go on with their lives as usual. And yet, he knew whatever he was feeling, thinking, or worrying about, there was a tiny life growing inside of Shannon. 


He and Shannon decided to search for a place where they could talk about their options. They found Informed Choices and nervously made an appointment. 


First, Shannon had a pregnancy test which was, unsurprisingly, positive. Then, she met with a nurse in the options consultation room where she was able to talk about all her options without hurry and in total confidentiality. 


Afterward, Ryan joined them in the ultrasound room where he saw and heard the tiny heart of his just 7-week unborn baby beating strong and loud. Suddenly, his thoughts, worries, and fears were less real than the beautifully beating heart of his and Shannon’s tiny baby. 


Ryan and Shannon decided to accept this unplanned baby as a gift from God and to trust Him to help them and to give them wisdom, guidance, and strength. Their families were surprised at first but soon supportive and by the time baby Ava* was born they were overjoyed. 


Ryan and Shannon are now married and working together to take the best care of Ava. Their families and friends have rallied around them, and this precious baby girl has a whole team of people who love her. 


Ryan’s story shows what can happen when a young man steps up and man's up to support the woman he loves and to embrace the life of their child.
